In this position, the employee will coordinate and execute laboratory efforts as part of TGen North's One Health/Public Health surveillance and response activities.
These activities include laboratory analysis in support of human, animal and environmental health surveillance programs as well as aiding public health investigations of potential infectious disease outbreaks in healthcare and community settings.
Microbiological and molecular techniques are required to culture, isolate, extract, and sequence pathogens of interest.
Due to the nature of emerging pathogens and outbreak investigations, projects change often and will require frequent literature reviews to accompany wet-bench lab work.
Duties and Responsibilities Read and understand peer-reviewed publications to gain knowledge about unfamiliar pathogens, effective sampling methods, culture requirements, genomic characteristics, and more Use knowledge of microbiology and molecular techniques combined with organism-specific research to develop a plan of action for new surveillance or outbreak investigation projects Develop protocols for wet-bench sample processing Perform required laboratory experiments Culture isolation and identification DNA Extraction qPCR Gel electrophoresis Library preparation Magnetic bead purifications Next Generation Sequencing ELISA Digital PCR Incorporate quality control systems (assay controls, reagent lot tracking, etc.
) Develop and maintain sample tracking systems Perform basic to moderate complexity analyses (differential culturing results, gel electrophoresis, qPCR, ELISA) Document all laboratory work performed for use in future publications Ensure experimental design and execution leads to a high confidence in the quality of all results Requirements Bachelor's degree in biology or related field Graduate degree preferred At least 2 years of experience in microbiology/molecular biology 5 years preferred Highly organized with good scientific communication skills Detail-oriented with an aptitude for problem-solving Confidence in microbiological and molecular theory and techniques Experience with experimental design in the fields of microbiology and molecular biology Ability to write clear and concise scientific protocols High quality laboratory work:
aseptic technique, high accuracy and precision in pipetting, etc.
